Despite recently losing one of its biggest attractions “On Nut Market”, the neighborhood still offers an uncontestable residential charm and attractiveness. While Bangkok’s Sukhumvit hosts more glamorous and trendy destinations (I.e. Phrom Phong or Thong Lo), On Nut has always offered a comfortable work-life balance at an affordable price.
What was once a rather rough and unpolished area has now become an important residential hotspot for commuters working in Bangkok’s business hubs such as Asoke, Phrom Phong or even Silom/Sathorn. This transformation can be attributed in large part to the BTS Skytrain which cuts down travelling time dramatically (I.e. On Nut- Asoke can be done in a comfortable 15-20 Minutes). As a result of this transport convenience, residential developers rapidly caught on and developed a range of mid-market Condos.
This mushrooming of developments (Residential, Commercial and Retail) is immediately apparent when you step off the BTS, with numerous prominent condos notably Ideo Verve, The President, Ideo Mobi Sukhumvit, etc. all visible from the Skytrain platform. This increase in housing choice at comparatively affordable prices has attracted a crowd of affluent young professionals and young couples, looking for the convenience/comfort of a Sukhumvit lifestyle at an affordable price tag.
Obviously, a residential neighborhood needs to offer more than just convenient public transport and good-value housing to create and host a community; however On Nut, manages to offer that comfortable combination of leisure options and easy access to work.
Firstly the area offers two major hypermarkets Tesco Lotus (Next to the BTS) and BIG C (Bang on Sukhumvit 77 “On Nut Road”) with both complexes offering a range of shops and eateries. On top of that, On Nut hosts a variety of street vendors that give it a vibrant local community feel. For individuals looking for a more serene or natural atmosphere, Sansiri will soon be launching a community mall dubbed “Habito” which lies in the heart of “The Base” Developments and which is ideally located by the canal.
This short area guide would be incomplete without a quick glimpse at the Condos On Nut has to offer!
Urban Escape Options
If you are looking to get away from the Urban Bangkok life once you get home, you can always consider these Condos
The Base Sukhumvit 77
Despite sitting right on busy Sukhumvit 77, this condo offers a surprisingly peaceful and relaxing environment. On top of this, it hosts amazing facilities with a basketball court, mini-football pitch, massive pool and impressive gym.
Despite being located right next to The Base Sukhumvit 77 and being developed by the same developer (Sansiri), the interiors of this development offer a completely different living experience. 1 Bed Units tend to be a decent 40 Sqm. and some of them offer stunning views over the canal. The living environment is serene and the light blue tiled pool feels like you’ve stepped in a resort!
If you are a young professional and all that really matters is price, you are in the right place
While the development is not the trendiest, the Units tend to be modern and functional. On top of that it is only a 5-10 Minute walk from the BTS which is perfect during the rainy season. Studios in this development can be rented between 8,000-11,000 THB.
Lumpini Ville Sukhumvit 77 (2)
Again not the most stylish development on offer, however it is functional and relatively well located (Right on Sukhumvit 77). With 1 Beds going at only 8,500 THB, you really can’t complain!
There are always great options available in On Nut, from older condos to more modern trendy offerings. One development which often gets overlooked
The Room Sukhumvit 79
Tucked away in quiet Sukhumvit 79, this development is only a 5-10 Minute walk to the BTS. Despite being approx. 8 years old, the Units in this development tend to be modern and fresh. Since Sukhumvit 79 is a quiet Soi, the environment is peaceful and the development feels pleasant. You can get a decently sized 2 Bed (56 Sqm.) at 25,000 THB (Negotiable) which is really great value!
On Nut is still up-and-coming unlike it’s more established counterparts such as Thong Lo (Which has consolidated its appeal as an entertainment neighborhood); however it is safe to assume that in the coming years, with the frenzy of development activity, leisure options such as Restaurants, Shops, Cafes and Bars will multiply!
